VATE Statement on SOL Revisions

The following motion passed unanimously at the Executive Board meeting of the Virginia Association of Teachers of English, November 2, 2002, Charlottesville:

The members of the Executive Board of the Virginia Association of Teachers of English request that the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education postpone the adoption of the revised English Language Arts Standards of Learning in order to address the following:

• questions of standards alignment (especially regarding editing) across grade levels
• de-emphasis on the importance of audience for writing
• placement of research standards within the grade levels
• removal of literature as a category of emphasis
• removal of narrative writing in the standards for grades 7 and 8
