Heritage Award
- The candidate must be a VATE member and a person of color who has made noteworthy contributions to the field within three calendar years prior to and including the year of nomination.
- The candidate must have accomplished at least two of the following:
- Held an office in VATE or its local affiliate
- Served in an official capacity on behalf of local affiliate or VATE
- Earned an advanced degree or be currently enrolled in a degree program
- Attended at least two English/Language arts conferences
- Attended seminars/conferences on cultural studies or cultural inclusion in the classroom
- The candidate must have accomplished at least three of the following:
- Published an article in The Needle’s Eye, Virginia English Bulletin, or other professional publication
- Served as a consultant to or organized a program/unit/inservice on issues of cultural and linguistic diversity
- Sponsored a newsletter/bulletin which reflects a diverse ethnicity
- Served as a presenter/panelist on programs, workshops, or seminars which
- Fostered an awareness of cultural experiences
- Organized or sponsored a club for students which promotes cultural awareness
- Implemented a course of study for a school or division which explores issues relating to cultural and linguistic diversity
- Other contributions which judges should consider listed and briefly explained
- Procedure
- List and document achievements (excerpts from programs, copies of articles, etc.).
- Submit two letters of endorsement of achievements from officals such as supervisors, principals, and others.
- Include a cover page with the following information:
Name, address, place of employment, length of employment, membership in professional organizations, and education.
